Quick Answer: Fortnite could return to iPhone and iPad in 2023. This information comes from a tweet from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.
Epic Games’ hit battle royale game Fortnite has been missing from Apple’s App Store for over two years.
Apple kicked the game off the store in 2020 after Epic Games failed to follow Apple’s rules on in-app purchases.
Epic allowed players to make in-app purchases outside the App Store, circumventing Apple’s 30% cut on purchases. Apple didn’t like that and subsequently removed the game from the App Store.
The follow-up to that decision led to a lawsuit against Apple from Epic and appeals that are still ongoing today.
When will Fortnite be back on iPhone?
Short Answer: Possibly sometime in 2023.
While it’s still unclear if and when the game will make its way back to iPhone and iPad, we got a bit of a hint from Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney at the end of 2022.
On New Year’s Eve, heading into 2023, Tim Sweeney sent out a cryptic tweet. It said, “Next year on iOS!”
Fortunately, he did follow up with an image of a Fortnite character staring into the sky at a firework display that said “2023.”
We haven’t heard any other official announcements regarding Fortnite’s return to the App Store. But it looks like Tim Sweeney might know something that the rest of us don’t.
There’s also a new law recently passed in the European Union that could give some insight.
The Digital Markets Act will require Apple and other companies to allow third-party app stores and alternative payment systems on their devices.
That could introduce a way for Epic Games to put Fortnite on Apple devices without needing the App Store. But we’re still waiting to see how that plays out once the Digital Markets Act goes into effect in May 2023.
Fortnite could finally make its way back to iPhones sometime this year. At least Tim Sweeney seems enthusiastic about the prospect.
